Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why San Clemente Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning
We provide independent HeatShield chimney cleaning and repair in San Clemente, including full flue resurfacing with Insul-X and Thermix systems. Most local sweeps can clean a flue, but very few can properly prep and apply HeatShield material when the original clay tiles have cracked, spalled, or debonded from years of salt air and minor seismic shifts. Call (877) 798-8489 for a free estimate on HeatShield service anywhere in San Clemente.
HeatShield is a flue resurfacing product, and we are an independent HeatShield service provider, not a manufacturer-authorized dealer. What that means for you is straightforward: we repair and install HeatShield systems with quality parts that fit them, and we follow the manufacturer’s engineered repair specifications on every job. Gus Medina, our owner, grew up in Rancho San Clemente and has spent most of his adult life working on homes along the Orange County coast. He knows what salt air does to a chimney, and he knows what a properly applied HeatShield lining should look like from the inside.
Why Trust Chimney Sweep San Clemente for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?
We have been installing and servicing HeatShield chimney relining systems since our shop opened in 2017, resolving failed flue tiles across South Orange County. Our technicians are trained directly on HeatShield’s Insul-X and Thermix formulas, and we follow the manufacturer’s engineered repair specifications for every job. That training matters because HeatShield is not a paint. It is a cementitious resurfacing system that bonds to the existing flue tile, and the difference between a lining that holds and one that fails in two years comes down to surface prep, mix ratio, and application technique.
Gus Medina picked up the chimney trade after completing hands-on HVAC and building systems coursework at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, then spent well over a decade working in the trade before starting Chimney Sweep San Clemente. He has been on more roofs in San Clemente than most people have walked past, and he has seen every way a relining job can go wrong. A clean chimney is a safe chimney – everything else is just a good-looking fireplace waiting to become a problem. That is the standard our crew works to, whether we are sweeping a flue or rebuilding one with HeatShield.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in San Clemente
- Insul-X cement delamination from the flue tile. The most common failure we see in San Clemente happens when the original installer skipped proper surface prep. Insul-X needs the tile mechanically wire-brushed and free of dust before application. If soot, salt residue, or old creosote was left behind, the cement layer eventually separates from the tile in sheets. We remove the failed section, re-prep the surface, and reapply with the correct primer.
- Thermix joint separation at the crown. When Thermix is applied over even a thin layer of soot or creosote, the material cannot achieve a proper mechanical bond. The crown area is especially vulnerable because that is where the flue meets the open air and where San Clemente’s marine-layer moisture condenses most. The result is a visible crack or gap at the crown joint, which lets water into the chimney chase. We grind back the failed area, clean it to bare substrate, and reapply with the correct profile.
- Cracking from thermal shock in wood insert applications. High-efficiency wood inserts burn hotter and cycle temperature faster than an open fireplace. A HeatShield lining that was not spec’d for that kind of heat can develop hairline cracks within a few seasons. During a Level 2 inspection, we check the lining for thermal stress cracks and recommend the correct HeatShield formula for the appliance you actually run.
- Failure at the flue collar after damper removal. We run into this often in older San Clemente homes where a previous contractor removed the throat damper to install a top-sealing damper and left the flue collar rough or uneven. HeatShield material applied over that surface will not hold. We re-prep the collar area and use the proper HeatShield damper seal before applying the lining material.
- Spalling clay tiles behind an intact-looking HeatShield surface. Sometimes the HeatShield surface looks fine, but the original clay tiles behind it are spalling from salt-air corrosion and minor seismic activity. A camera inspection shows the tiles shifting. We perform a full condition assessment and recommend either tuckpointing and a crown coat if the tiles are structurally sound, or a complete reline if they are not.
HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We use genuine HeatShield Insul-X and Thermix when the job requires engineered relining, and we always specify OEM accessories like the HeatShield damper seal. We do not stock or claim to stock OEM or genuine HeatShield parts – we are an independent shop, and we use quality parts that fit HeatShield equipment correctly. When a flue has only minor spalling, we will first recommend tuckpointing and a crown coat, saving you the cost of a full reline if the tiles are still structurally sound. The decision comes down to what the camera shows us, not what the commission structure rewards. If you want an honest read on whether your HeatShield lining needs a repair or a full replacement, call (877) 798-8489 and we will schedule an inspection.
Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. We start with a Level 2 camera inspection of the flue, running from the firebox to the crown. We look for delamination, joint separation, thermal cracking, and salt-air deterioration behind the HeatShield surface. You see every image we capture, and we explain what it means in plain English.
- 2
Repair or resurface. Depending on what the camera shows, we either tuckpoint and coat the crown, remove and reapply a failed section, or perform a full flue resurfacing with the correct HeatShield formula for your appliance. Every application follows the manufacturer’s engineered repair specifications.
- 3
Test. After the material cures, we run a follow-up camera inspection to verify the bond is uniform and the flue is clear end to end. We do not call a job done until the images confirm the surface is sound.
- 4
Warranty-safe documentation. We document the prep, application, and final inspection for your records, so if you ever need warranty follow-up or an insurance read, you have the evidence.

AfterHeatShield Products We Service & Install in San Clemente
We work with the full range of HeatShield resurfacing products, including Insul-X, Thermix, Thermix-S, and Insul-Stick. Each formula is engineered for a specific application: Insul-X for standard masonry flue tiles, Thermix for higher-temperature or mixed-fuel applications, Thermix-S for specific structural reinforcement scenarios, and Insul-Stick as a bonding primer. We match the product to the flue condition and the appliance you run. We do not stock HeatShield product in a warehouse – we order what the job requires and apply it within the manufacturer’s working-time window. For San Clemente homeowners with original clay tile flues from the 1920s through the 1970s, this is the difference between a patch and a permanent repair.
We Also Service These Brands
HeatShield is one of the professional trade lines we work with, but not the only one. We install DuraFlex flexible liner systems for full chimney relines and Gelco chimney caps for crown protection. If your flue needs a different solution than resurfacing, we will tell you that plainly, and we can handle the work without referring you to another contractor.
FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service in San Clemente
No. We are an independent HeatShield service provider. We are not factory-trained, certified, or authorized by HeatShield, and we do not claim to be. What we bring is hands-on experience applying their formulas correctly, and the willingness to show you the camera evidence before and after every job.
Insul-X is a cementitious resurfacing compound engineered for standard masonry flue tiles in open fireplaces. Thermix is formulated for more demanding conditions, including higher heat output and mixed-fuel appliances. The choice comes down to the flue condition and the appliance you burn. We match the formula to your setup, not to what we happen to have on the truck.
No. Creosote must be removed down to bare flue tile before any HeatShield product can bond. If the tile is not mechanically cleaned and the surface is not properly primed, the material will debond at the soot layer, and you will be paying to fix the same flue twice. Creosote removal is always step one, and we include it in the prep for every HeatShield job. Call (877) 798-8489 for a free estimate.
A typical HeatShield resurfacing on a single-story San Clemente chimney is a one-day job for the application itself, with a return visit for the follow-up camera inspection after the material cures. Larger flues or heavy spalling may take longer, and high-moisture conditions from the marine layer can extend cure times slightly. We schedule the work around the product’s working-time window, not the other way around.
No. HeatShield resurfacing material lines the flue, not the crown. A cracked crown needs a crown coat or full crown rebuild, which we do as a separate repair. We will flag the crown during our inspection and tell you if it can wait or if it needs immediate attention. If it needs immediate attention, we provide a written estimate before any work starts.
HeatShield service costs vary based on flue condition, flue length, and whether we are repairing a section or resurfacing the full length. A standard chimney sweep is one price, but HeatShield repair is priced per job by written estimate after the camera inspection. Nothing is recommended without evidence you can see for yourself. Call (877) 798-8489 for an exact quote – estimates are free.
